Overview
The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort was built and opened as the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel in 1990 by Seibu Group, which had acquired the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, located a little north. Both hotels share the nearby Mauna Kea and Hapuna golf courses, the latter designed by Arnold Palmer. From 1996 to 2001, all Prince Hotels in Hawaii and Alaska joined the Westin hotels. After closed for renovation, the hotel has been known as the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort since 2018, although its property remains under Seibu Group.
The hotel's name comes Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area as it stands next to the park, famous for its white sand. It is one of the newly developed larger resort hotels on the west coast of the Big Island: from south to north, the Sheraton at Keauhou, the King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel in Kailua Kona, the Four Seasons Hotel in Kaupulehu, in Kona District; and the Hilton and Marriott in Waikoloa Beach, the Fairmont Orchid Hotel in Mauna Lani Resort, the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort/the Hapuna Beach Prince, and the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel on Kauana Bay, in Kohala District.
