Weeping painting

A weeping painting is a painting which has been observed to be shedding tears or weeping. The tears exuded are often claimed to be of a substance which appears to be similar to human blood. The phenomenon of weeping paintings is closely connected to that of the more common weeping statues. Connected to weeping paintings are sometimes other phenomena such as miraculous healing.

Such paintings are generally observed by members of the Christian religion. Many propose that the apparent weeping of the paintings is in fact merely a psychological phenomena on the part of the observers, while many others defend them as spiritual events, a form of revelation or apparition.

Others still propose that the substances are actually condensation of moisture on the surface of the paintings.

The Catholic Church has always, in the event of miraculous and apparitious events, been very careful on their approach - particularly in the case of weeping paintings, because of the uncertainty of the phenomena, of which there can be no argument.
