Weave News is a grassroots journalism organization whose overarching mission is “to weave the world together and promote social justice by investigating underreported stories, highlighting alternative perspectives, and promoting grassroots media production and critical media literacy.” Weave News was founded in 2006 by students, faculty, and alumni from St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York. Weave News is open to receiving submissions from anyone at any time. In addition to soliciting specific pieces for ongoing series via their respective submission forms, the organization's website features a general "Call for Submissions" form through which anyone can pitch a story that doesn't necessarily fall under any one specific series. If a pitch is accepted, contributors will work with the editor(s) who are assigned to whichever series the piece will be published under. Organization & Funding Weave News is organized into Editorial, Communications, and Development teams, with directors, coordinators, editors, contributing editors, and interns working under each. The Weave News staff also includes audio engineers, production managers and assistants, and design managers and assistants. Weave News has published various works from many different contributors over the years. Contributors are located all over the globe and include students, artists, activists, professors, writers, and community leaders. The organization is funded primarily by donations via the Weave News Contributors Fund as well as grants, including a 2018 St. Lawrence University Innovation Grant, a Grant for Racial Justice and Equity from the Black Laurentian Initiative (BLI) at St. Lawrence University, and grants funded by Patti McGill Peterson through the Peterson Center for International and Intercultural Studies at St. Lawrence University. Weave News has held an annual fundraiser each year since 2020, which is primarily publicized through social media channels and brings in donations made online. The first Annual Fundraiser took place in December 2020, while the organization's first Summer Fundraiser was in June 2021. During the 2021 Annual Fundraiser, the organization launched it's True Fans Club, which was renamed the Weave News Coffee Club for the 2022 Summer Fundraiser.
