We Have a Technical

"We Have A Technical" is a Gary Numan song which was released on the re-issued Replicas CD. The lyrics were inspired by the works of Phillip K Dick and William S. Burroughs, like alot Numan's material from this period. In this song a police dispacher monitoring the thought-criminals is invoked ("We have a random on the westside / Personality malfunction".... "He's addicted to the time track") as well as a sleazy personal contact ("He says I cant give you anything at all / Just a room with a bad view of you"). The lyrics reprise the desire of Numan's androids to be human ("I could crawl around the floor just like I'm real", a lyric later used in Metal) which itself may be a metaphor for his own admitted autism.
This song was covered by Damon Albarn and Matt Sharp on the 1997 tribute album "Random". It was finally performed live for the 2008 Replicas tour, 29 years after its initial recording.
