((hangon)) Watchingthewest is an online publication, dealing in film, politics and predominantly music. It is playing a significant role in the movement within criticism, "Revival Journalism" which aims to change journalism for the 2010s and put an end to poor, dishonest reviewing. The webzine is known for its visual content and tough criticism. Its controversial weekday podcast known as "The Late Session" has a growing listenership along with the webzines flagship weekend podcast "The Hippie Den Session". Watchingthewest was set-up as a response to what Editor-In-Chief, Francis Gibson called "fairy-journalism" which he went onto explain in an article for the webzine "No one has the balls to say the truth anymore, it's just four stars for everything, critics have lost touch with what art is, they've become too obsessed with material excess in an immaterial profession." Watchingthewest.com is updated daily. History In the Spring of 2009, an unpublished college dropout from London, Francis Gibson teamed up with two of his close friends, the now Music Editor at watchingthewest, Chad Blacksmith, and the now News Editor, Jimmy Lanka. The mission, was to start an internet publication, promoting far left views in politics, and reform in the music industry. A turbulent set-up ensued with Jimmy Lanka leaving the project early on for unknown reasons (he returned as News Editor in late August 2009). Francis instantly saw there being a place for a radio show and got together a podcasting team, a matter of days before the pre-launch which was at the beginning of August 2009. Although the webzine had been running actively for more than two issues (two weeks) it officially opened it's doors to the public on the 31st of August 2009. Main features Watchingthewest is known for its visual layout, which at times, can look more like a printed magazine than a website. The sites harsh stance on brutal honesty throughout all of its content creates an always informative and occasionally amusing reader/listener experience. A podcast is recorded and uploaded every day except Sundays, offering "great music and humerus conversation" Podcasts Since its launch, watchingthewst has ran podcasts every day of the week except for Sundays. Originally the weekday slots were filled with a podcast called "The Afternoon Session" but on the 31st of August 2009 it became known as "The Late Session" the original podcast was downloadable from 4pm Mon-Fri, this was changed to a later time of 9pm, hence "The Late Session". A morning show was also originally recorded, but was abolished due to poor listening figures. The weekly weekend podcast is known as "The Hippie Den Session" named after watchingthewest's original office and features the three watchingthewest resident DJs/hosts.
