Virginia Grande

Virginia Grande Castro (born May 6, 1987 in Madrid, Spain) is a Spanish computer scientist. She is currently a research assistant at Uppsala University. Her research interests are human-computer interaction and computing education. She is noted for her leadership in broadening participation of women in computing.
There are global concerns about the low representation of women in computing. This topic have gained more importance with the emerging information age. Virginia is an active advocate of diversity in computing. She is both working on studying the underlying reason for lack of female participation in the area as well as conducting efforts at a European level to encourage participation of women in computing.
Early life and education
Grande studied computer engineering and received her B.Eng + M.Eng in 2014 at Technical University of Madrid. Her thesis was done in collaboration with Uppsala University and it was titled "ColLabWoW: development of a decision support add-on for World of Warcraft". Grande's thesis was presented during the poster session at womENcourage 2014.
Career
Grande is an active volunteer for causes related to computing, and in particular, the inclusion of women in computing. Since 2012, Virginia has been the Communications Officer of the Council of European Chapter Leaders for ACM. As part of her work, Grande motivates people to charter ACM chapters all around Europe.
In 2013, Grande co-founded the Uppsala University ACM-W Student Chapter, and she has been an active member ever since.
In 2014, Grande volunteered for the first womENcourage Celebration of Women in Computing. She also volunteered for ITICSE 2014.
Grande is currently chair of the womENcourage Celebration of Women in Computing 2015.
