Violence against animals in India

The animals have been revered in India since the establishment of civilisation. In the Hindu mythology the animals are given the status of semi deities and the agricultural economy of India too permits the bonding between the humans and the animals, specifically with the domesticated ones. In order to prohibit the violation of rights of the animals and for the purpose of eliminating unnecessary suffering they undergo in slaughterhouses, a number of laws are in force. The Prevention of cruelty to Animals, (Slaughterhouse) Rules, 2001, Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act,1960 (PCA Act) to mention a few for the safety, protection, punishment in cases of animal cruelty. Article 48A, Article 51A(g), Sections 428 and 429 of the IPC lay out rules against animal cruelty among other Rules and Acts of Indian Constitution. Rule 3 of Slaughterhouse Rules, 2001 also states that animal sacrifice is illegal in every part of the country. In addition, certain wildlife crimes are also investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). But, despite of these stringent laws, the cases of abuse against animals are prevalent in India.
Kerala Elephant incident, 2020
In 2020, a pregnant Elephant in the Silent Valley National Park of Kerala became victim of the human cruelty. According to the Chief wildlife warden of the area, the Elephant was fed on a pineapple filled with crackers, which damaged her jaw. The pachyderm finally died after her long stand in the Velliyar river.
Bhopal's abuse against Dog case
In 2020 itself, a 29 years old man was booked under section 429 of Indian Penal Code for throwing a stray dog into the lake from the railings of a bridge. The incident took place near "Shyamala hills" in Bhopal, where the video of accused got viral in which the scene of abuse against the animal was portrayed. The violence was committed for the sake of social media videos.
