Valerie A. Johnson is an American trial lawyer based in Durham, North Carolina who is a board certified specialist in workers' compensation. Career Valerie co-edited North Carolina Workers' Compensation Law: A Practical Guide To Success at Every Stage of a Claim. She serves on the board of the NCAJ (North Carolina Advocates for Justice). Valerie has taught trial advocacy at the University of North Carolina since 2003. Governor Roy Cooper appointed Valerie to the North Carolina State Board of Elections in 2018. However, she and another candidate were deemed ineligible, because they had engaged in “electioneering” activities in the previous four years.
She was appointed to the board of directors of Lawyers Mutual Liability Insurance in 2015. Valerie is also a member of the North Carolina Association of Black Lawyers and Women Attorneys. Valerie is also the co-editor of The Essentials of North Carolina Workers' Compensation Law. She was also elected into the National Academy of Social Insurance in 2010.
