Upstate Connecticut is a term commonly used to refer to Connecticut's rural northern counties. This usually includes Litchfield County, Hartford County, Tolland County, and Windham County. On occasion, the towns of Sherman, New Fairfield, Brookfield, and sometimes the city of Danbury, all of which are in northern Fairfield County, are included in the term Upstate Connecticut due to their close proximity to Litchfield County.
In popular culture, the term Upstate Connecticut mostly refers to the very mountainous regions of Connecticut that are located in the Berkshire and Taconic Mountain Ranges of the Appalachian Mountains, and the sections of the Metacomet Ridge Mountains that lie in the northern counties of Connecticut.
