UNRESERVED: The Work of Louie Gong
|
UNRESERVED - The Work of Louie Gong is a 2009 short documentary film directed by Tracy Rector, looking at the complexities of multi-racial identity through the eyes of Native American artist and activist Louie Gong. The film premiered at the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival in February 2010. Synopsis “UNRESERVED” is an intimate profile of Pacific Northwest artist and activist Louie Gong (Nooksack, Squamish, Chinese, French, Scottish). In March 2009, Gong began merging Coast Salish art with pop culture icon Vans Shoes in an effort to represent the complexities of multi-racial cultural identity -- something he refers to as “walking in multiple worlds”. Raised in a rural farm house in Canada before moving to live on a small Indian reservation in Northwestern Washington state, allowed Gong to develop a unique character. He is not a schooled artist but a self-trained person who has chosen to explore his world and identity via shoe designs. "UNRESERVED" is a story about the youth of today and the unique connection to identity that many find through contemporary images and icons. The film is an exploration of the changing face of American culture and society. Production Principal photography took place on the Nooksack Indian Reservation, WA and in Seattle, WA.
