United States of Earth

The United States of Earth is the fictional world government in the TV series Futurama.

This government name which is a fan creation, and not used in the series, is a parody of the United States' sphere of influence, with numerous similarities. It is run by a presidential system (headed by the President of Earth), its capital is Washington, D.C. (which is rededicated in 2475 to "Sweathog" Freddie "Boom Boom" Washington from Welcome Back, Kotter), and its citizens are called Earthicans. It is a member of Democratic Order Of Planets' or D.O.O.P., an interplanetary organization similar to the U.N.. The government is described by Omicronians as ' Weak and fearful'. Although never seen on screen, there are references that the United States of Earth still uses a constitution-based system of government, with a widely expanded bill of rights. Its flag looks like the flag of the United States, with a globe centered on the Western Hemisphere in place of the 50 stars. Politically, the Earth Government is similar to that of the United States with a two-party system with a number of third parties. The two main parties are the Tastycrats and the Fingerlicans. Anyone who votes for third parties are regarded as 'weirdos and mutants'. The various sub-states are headed by governors, prime ministers and other similar leaders.

The head of Richard Nixon is elected President of Earth by exploiting the fact that Earthican law states that no body can be elected more than twice; Nixon managed to run by putting his disembodied head on various robotic bodies ("A Head in the Polls"). Usually, though, his head is shown without any body. President McNeal is killed by invading Omicronians in an earlier episode. However, it remains to be seen whether Nixon will still be President of Earth as he was taken into hell by the Robot Devil in "The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings."

The Earth is a very free place and highly values liberty. According to Nixon, it is so free that people can even decide in which hand to have their sex monitoring chip installed. Earth's taxes are voluntary, though those who opt out of paying have to spend a weekend with the Pain Monster. Earth's national holiday is "Freedom Day," where the usual freedoms are expanded to the point of basic anarchy. The flag is often referred to affectionately as "Old Freebie" ("A Taste of Freedom").
