Summary An ‘unhotel’ is the name given to a private house or home that is used for paying guests to stay in on an exclusive basis. The ‘unhotel’ offers many of the trappings of a hotel, such as fresh bed linen, toiletries and dedicated personal service, but is set within the unique surroundings of what is often an unusual or architecturally interesting property. The term was first originated by Greg Marsh, CEO and co-founder of the accommodation provider Onefinestay, in 2009. Since then, it has been used increasingly in the press to denote this style of accommodation, as in the Evening Standard’s 2011 lexicon for 2011, where it was described as having ‘crept into our vocabulary’.
