Rules
Ultimate football can be played on any general athletic surface. Generally, end zones are assigned at each lateral side of the playing surface. A game begins with a kick off, and the receiving team trying to advance a football forward to the opposing goal. Once a player obtains possession of the ball from the kick off, the following rules apply:
1. No Fighting on the field - Players who fail to be able to control themselves will be ejected from play.
2. No Arguing with League Officials.
3. Players will bring an adequate amount of water and stay hydrated. Teams should bring coolers to the field.
4. A game will consist of two 20 minute halves - a five minute break will be taken between halves.
5. The field will be marked with cones or by an agreed upon marking system. Goal depth will be 10
Paces (or yards) deep. Once the ball crosses the goal line, play will stop and the team will earn one point. The non-scoring team will move to the opposite end of the field, the scoring team will kick from the 20 yard line.
6. Teams will play with 10 players at any one time (substitutions can be made on the fly and at anytime. Everyone on the team must play at some point in time during each contest.
7. The team in possession of the ball can use the overhand, lateral, underhand pass or kick to advance the football. This can be done forwards or backwards.
8. Once a player catches the ball, he is allowed three steps of forward momentum. If forward
momentum is not used, or needed, the player cannot take those three steps. The player must make an effort to stop after he catches the ball. Failure to stop will result in a change of possession or turnover. The ball can not be advanced by running or floating across the goal line. If the ball is advanced across the goal line in this manner, the team will be required to make one more pass in the end zone to score.
9. The defender must count out loud as such, " one thousand, two thousand, three thousand, four thousand and five thousand" to assist the referee - who is the official five second clock keeper. If the player being guarded (with the ball) has not moved the ball after the " five thousand count" there will be a change of possession or turnover. If forward steps are taken, the ball is placed on the ground and a change of possession occurs. The opposing team may only count 5 thousand against a stationary opponent. Only the defensive player nearest the ball (one arm length) may count.
10. If the team in possession of the ball throws an incomplete pass or drops the ball, they lose possession. The opposing team will take procession of the ball where the ball comes to rest. If the ball is dropped in the end zone the ball will be brought to the goal line, and advanced from there.
11. Defenders must give the player in possession of the ball one arms length of free space to
throw the ball. Failure to do so will stop play, a definition of the rule will be re-explained, and play will resume. If a player continues to violate this penalty the player will be benched for the remainder of that half. Defenders cannot knock the ball out of the hands of the thrower or the player who catches the pass.
12. A coin toss will determine the first possession of the game. If a team kicks at the start of the game, they will receive at the start of the second half. The ball must be kicked off to start a new series after a score. The ball will be kicked from the 20-yard line. If the ball is kicked into the end zone, the ball will be placed at the goal line. If the ball is kicked out of bounds, the ball will be placed at the 50-yard line. The ball can either be place kicked or punted. The receiving team does not lose possession of the ball if they drop the kick.
13. Defenders cannot interfere with the player who is trying to catch the ball. However, the defender has the same right to the ball -while it is in the air. If it is determined that the defender caused interference, the ball will be place at the point of the violation and play will continue.
