Turbotronics is an American electro powerpop band based in Brooklyn, New York. Among their first releases to the public was a music video shot on a commercial airplane in flight, entitled [http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseactionvids.individual&VideoID35207883 "International."] The band was formed in early 2008 by Music Producer and multi-instrumentalist ‘Turbo’ Robbie Norris. Turbotronics songs are typically of humorous nature, performed in a deadpan 80s musical style reminiscent of Prince, Talking Heads, The Doors and Neil Diamond. The band’s lineup includes Turbo (lead vocals, guitar) T Almy (synths, background vocals, dancing), Wild Ginger (synths, background vocals, yoga) Brian Licari (Bass, jump kicks) and Ryan Dismatsek (Drums). Together, Wild Ginger and T Almy are known as the 'Skinny Bitches.' Turbotronics’ debut performance was at the Annex in New York City on February 9, 2008. Notable recommendation and write up for the performance was given by Time Out NY: Turbotronics offer ’80s-style electropop melodrama, served up with a healthy sense of kitsch.
In concert, Turbo and the Skinny Bitches often wear custom Turbotronics cheerleading uniforms. On stage, and in their videos, Turbo always wears a signature pair of cheap white plastic sunglasses Love Slave Songs from Turbotronics’ self-released debut album entitled, “Love Slave” were recorded at Flytrap Studios in Brooklyn, NY. Drums were recorded at NY Noise in Manhattan. Turbo wrote, engineered and produced the album while playing nearly every instrument (bass, guitar, synths, wurlitzer, vocals). Other musicians on the album include drummer Ryan Dismatsek, guitarist Dave Bowers, saxophonists Rick DePofi and Jeremy Wall, and vocalists T Almy, Jennifer DeVeau and Nina Shankar.
Music Videos Turbotronics has released two music videos, for the songs [http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseactionvids.individual&VideoID22445208 "Crush."] and [http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseactionvids.individual&VideoID35207883 "International."]. Dumb Bunny Productions in New York City directed both videos. Crush features Wild Ginger dancing in a doorway while Turbo watches from his bed, wearing black underwear. In reality, while shooting the video, Wild Ginger was dancing to the song, What a Feeling from the album Flashdance.
Notably, their second music video, “International,” was shot on an airplane in flight, and on two continents: Paris, Rome, New York and San Francisco. Never before has an independent band managed such a feat. The video features Wild Ginger as an international flight attendant and Turbo as various love interests from around the world.
National Recognition Turbotronics licensed three songs from the album Love Slave to MTV for nationally aired commercials in 2007-2008.
