Tufts Democrats

The Tufts Democrats are the arm of the Democratic Party at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts and a duly recognized extracurricular student organization at that institution. The group is an official chapter of the College Democrats of Massachusetts and, by extension, the College Democrats of America and the Democratic National Committee.

Organization
The club membership is served by an core executive board, elected annually at the end of the Spring semester. Following their election in the Spring, and in the first weeks of the following Fall semester, the new members of the executive board consider applications for an expansive set of additional leadership positions. These appointed organization leaders, together with the elected executive board, comprise the Tufts Democrats Executive Committee. The Tufts Democrats Executive Committee bears the ultimate responsibility for the coordination of the organization's activities and is responsible for organizing a semesterly Tufts Democrats Internship Fair, an annual Issues of the Future Symposium and various other social and intellectually-focused programming that occurs on a consistent basis.

Additionally, in the year proceeding the selection of a Democratic Presidential Nominee members of the Tufts Democrats form subgroups within the organization in support of the various Democratic candidates. Each subgroup functions semi-autonomously and will often arrange for opportunities for political activism in support of its candidate. Subgroups often take trips to campaign in the nearby early primary state of New Hampshire.

Currently, the executive board consists of the following five positions:

*Secretary: Shana Hurley
*Communications Director: Mike Vastola
*Freshman Representative: Brian Agler
*Freshman Representative: Sarah Hacking

Major undertakings
The most notable undertaking of the Tufts Democrats during the past year has been the consistent presence it has maintained in Democratic campaigns throughout the Northeastern United States. Prior to the 2006 United States House of Representatives elections in particular, the Tufts Democrats arranged for bus loads of students to travel to Connecticut's 2nd congressional district, where Tufts alum Joe Courtney was engaged in a heated campaign against a then-Republican incumbent Rob Simmons. Courtney was eventually elected by just a 91-vote margin of victory.
