Tim Archer

Timothy John Archer is a British politician and local councillor. He is currently the Conservative Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the newly created constituency of Poplar and Limehouse at the next general election. He was selected to be the Conservative candidate by residents via an open primary in May 2007.
Early life
Tim was born in 1974, grew up in Sutton and went to school in South London. Tim’s father was born in the East End of London and moved to Bermondsey after being bombed-out during the war.
Tim studied Economics and Politics at University of Bath. Since graduation he has also completed a degree in Financial Services at the University of Manchester and is an Associate of the Institute of Financial Services.
Career
Tim is a Conservative councillor for Blackwall and Cubitt Town on Tower Hamlets Council, and is also the Deputy Leader of the Conservative group on the council. Tim first stood for election in Tower Hamlets at the 2002 elections, and stood in the 2002 Blackwall and Cubitt Town by-election where he failed to win by a mere 10 votes - the closest a Conservative had ever got to being elected to Tower Hamlets council up until that point. This by-election was very much a turning point for Conservatives in Tower Hamlets and subsequently led to 7 Conservative councillors being elected to Tower Hamlets Council in the 2006 local elections. The Conservatives now number 8 councillors in Tower Hamlets , and form the official opposition to the Labour administration.
Tim was the Parliamentary Candidate for Poplar and Canning Town constituency at the 2005 general election, coming second. Tim achieved the largest Labour to Conservative swing of anywhere in the country and halved the Labour majority.
Tim has twice visited Bangladesh, firstly in January 2008 along with Conservative MP Anne Main and again in January 2010 with Mark Field MP, when he met the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina . A large proportion of the constituency he hopes to represent in parliament is made up of Bengali Muslims.
Tim is a School Governor of a Tower Hamlets Primary School and is also a trustee of the Isle of Dogs Community Foundation. He lives on the Isle of Dogs with his wife Jane, and their young son.
Campaigns and Media Coverage
Tim has campaigned on a number of issues relating to Tower Hamlets and receives extensive coverage in the media. Poplar and Limehouse is considered to be a marginal seat in the forthcoming 2010 UK general election, and so the seat and Tim are often featured in articles and features about the election, most recently on BBC One's Politics Show. He has recently focused on issues such as the future of Robin Hood Gardens and the East End Life newspaper. He also writes a regular column for The Wharf newspaper . At the recent Conservative Party Conference, he spoke at a number of fringe events, including at an event organised by the Equality and Human Rights Commission on a panel along side Trevor Philips and Eleanor Laing. Tim also appears regularly on local radio and television stations aimed at the local Bengali community in East London.
