Thomas Turrell

Thomas Frederick Turrell (born 21 October 1991) is a British Conservative Party politician and former Member of Youth Parliament (MYP) for Wellingborough (borough) and East Northamptonshire. Born at the Saint Bartholomew Hospital, Chatham, Kent on the 21st October 1991. Thomas a member of Conservative Way Forward and the Tax Payers Alliance. Thomas was also the first Chairman of the Wellingborough Youth Council and Procedures Group Representative for the East Midlands in the UK Youth Parliament.
Personal Life
Thomas grew up in Sheerness, Kent. In 2003 Thomas moved to Wellingborough.
Education
Thomas achieved 10 GCSEs and was accepted into Weavers Sixth Form where he studied four A-levels in Psychology, Sociology, Art and English Literature.
Career
Private Sector
Thomas' started of working as a Leaflet Distributor before becoming offered a job as a Customer Service Assistant. In September 2009 Thomas accepted a position at C & J Clarks International Limited as a member of the sales team in the Wellingborough Store.
Voluntary Sector
In 2008 Thomas became Managing Director of BEENS limited, but did not take a salary, BEENS set up and ran different Youth Clubs, in late 2008 at the start of the UK's Economic Downturn BEENS found it difficult to cope Financially and as a result dissolved in June 2009. In January 2010 Thomas was invited to become Chairman of the ODS Youth Executive Committee, in June 2010 Thomas resigned this post to spend more time with his family.
UK Youth Parliament
MYP
In February 2008 Thomas was elected the new Member of Youth Parliament for Wellingborough and the Deputy Member for Northamptonshire, taking office on the 3rd March 2008. As the Member of Youth Parliament Thomas went to Houses of Parliament to debate in the House of Lords on the 2nd May 2008, where he spoke in opposition of abolishing free University fees and in the House of Commons on the 30th October 2009, where he opposed Free Public Transport for Young People.
Thomas went Portcullis House with Cllr. Joan Kirkbride, who was then Northamptonshire Counties Council Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, to discuss introducing Young Mayors in Northamptonshire, as promised during his election. In July 2009 Thomas attended County Council Pre-Cabibet and Cabinet meeting to shadow Joan Kirkbride, now Deputy Leader of the Council, where he followed up any further developments to the scheme. The scheme was introduced in 2010 re-named as Young Leaders and the first election took place between the 21st June and 2nd July 2010 with results being announced on the 7th July 2010.
In June 2009 Thomas was promoted to the role of Media Representative for the East Midlands and in October took on a second constituency becoming the Member of Youth Parliament for East Northamptonshire following the resignation of the incumbent. Thomas took over primarily as a caretaker to look after the area for the 6 months leading into the election. As Media Rep Thomas spent a day with the BBC working on overage of the UK Youth Parliaments debate in the House of Commons. The next day he was part of that debate.
Procedures Group Representative
In December 2009 Thomas was made the Procedures Group Representative for the East Midlands. In this role he was responsibly for representing the East Midlands MYP's. In March 2010 Thomas attended the last East Midlands Assembly meeting before it became the East Midlands Council (EMC) in order to ensure UKYP was involved in the EMC. Thomas resigned as PG with affect as of the 26th June 2010 as he wanted to spend more time with his family before Council elections and University. Adam Gravely was named as acting PG until the 2010 PG elections, as he had come third in the PG elections in 2009.
Adviser
Having been Election Agent to Jon Reynolds in the 2010 UKYP elections Thomas was offered the job as Jon's Media Adviser and Chief Adviser to the newly created Board of Advisers Jon created.
Youth Council
In May 2008 Thomas joined the Wellingborough Youth Council representing Wellingborough-Wide, the Ward reserved for the boroughs MYP and later the boroughs Young Leader as well. He became the Youth Councils representative on the Youth Advisory Panel in August 2008, remaining in the role until January 2010 when he resigned as part of his UKYP withdrawal timetable.
In September 2009 following the Councils reform Thomas became the "Father of the Council" being the longest serving and only original male member of the Council from May, the following month Thomas had to drop this title when he was elected as the Chairman of the Youth Council, being the first person to serve in this role, under his Chairmanship an additional £13,000 pounds was invested into the Youth Council.
In Match 2010 Thomas resigned as Chairman and as a Youth Councillor when his term in UKYP came expired. In his resignation he claimed that "I sat on this council through UKYP and as I will no longer serve as the MYP it is wrong of me to continue service on the Council. There is no place for the un-elected amongst the elected". His resignation came into affect the same day as he left office as the MYP.
Conservative Party
After the 2005 general election Thomas decided to get involved in Politics, after first supporting Labour as his mother was a Labour supporter, tho not actually joining nor talking to any local Labour members, he shortly realized that he did not support nor agree with the party, having been impressed by David Cameron and reading the Conservative Party policy he formally joined the Conservative party.
Thomas worked as a volunteer at the Wellingborough Conservative Association in order to learn more about back-stage politics and the workings of the grass routes. In 2010 he became a Member of the Conservative Way Forward group.
Conservative Future
In 2006 Thomas joined the Conservative Party, aged 13 thus also joining Conservative Future. In November 2009 he applied to be the Conservative Future Area Chairman for Sussex, but not living in the area and lack of Conservative Future Office lead his application to be unsuccessful.
Council attempts
Thomas had his first selection experience in 2010 for the borough council by-election in the Redwell West Ward, Wellingborough. He was unsuccessful in this attempt but was made an approved Conservative Candidate for the 2011 local elections. Thomas was involved in the backstage parts of the election due to his voluntary work at the Conservative Office, working with the election agent.
