Thomas Page McBee is an American writer based in New York City known for his work on masculinity and gender. His writings have appeared in numerous collections and he has presented talks on masculinity, trans issues, and media narratives at colleges across the United States. He transitioned gender in 2011. He was an editor at Boston Phoenix before joining PolicyMic as their managing editor. McBee got his start writing from his third grade teacher Mrs. Nichols who made the class write poetry. He spent five years as the writer-in-residence at the Ruth Asawa School of the Arts in San Francisco. He lives in New York City. Publications McBee writes columns "Self-Made Man" for Rumpus and "The American Man" for Pacific Standard. His essays and reportage have appeared in The New York Times, TheAtlantic.com, VICE, Salon, and BuzzFeed. His memoir, Man Alive: A True Story of Violence, Forgiveness, and Becoming a Man, will be published by City Lights in September 2014. An early version won the Mary Tanenbaum nonfiction award from the San Francisco Foundation and was a finalist for the 2012 Bakeless literary prize administered by Graywolf and Breadloaf.
