Thomas Adam (alderman)

Thomas Adam was a Scottish - Australia 1819 - 1904. He was builder , politician and property developer.
Early Life
Born in Kilmarnock , Scotland in 1819 to parents Thomas and Helen Adam.
Arriving in Australia
He migrated to Australia with family in 1837.. Between 1857-1861 he developed a sawmill on Bullock Island .<ref name":0" /> In 1857 he purchased 21 acres of land at Onebygamba (Wickham).In 1869 he purchased 54 acres of crown land in Hamilton along Glebe Road which he later sold to the Waratah Coal Company.<ref name":1" />.
In 1849 built a punt to cross the Hunter River at Morepeth. <ref name":0" />. <ref name":0" /> Between 1857-1861 Thomas Adam and his brother in law William Bowden constructed over 200 barges to take coal from Ironbark Creek from Minmi mine near Wallsend.<ref name=":0" />
Raymond Terrace
On December 1874 he moved to Raymond Terrace.<ref name":0" />.He established a saw mill , flour mill and shipping agency.<ref name":0" />. He was the manager of the Hunter River New Steamship Company.<ref name=":0" />.
Political Career
For 1859 to 1872 he served as Alderman on Newcastle City Council.<ref name=":0" />. He was unsuccessfully on being elected on the NSW Legislative Assembly.<ref name":0" /> He became the mayor of Raymond Terrace in 1887.<ref name":0" />.
Newcastle National School
In 1858 he established the first non denominational school in Newcastle and wanted elected on the local school board.<ref name":0" />. He persuading the National Education board to build premises for a permanent vested National School.<ref name":0" />. He served as a patron , tradesmen and secretary on the board.<ref name":0" /> . He laid the schools foundation stone on 25th October 1862.<ref name":0" />. He was removed from the board in 1867.<ref name=":0" />
Personal Life
The surveyor A.S Huntley gave the name to newcastle suburb Adamstown named after Thomas Adam as he was one of the first European settlers.<ref name=":1" />He embarked on embarked on eight world vogue returning to Sydney in June 1840.<ref name":0" />. In 1840 he married Rebecca Bowden and had ten children with her.<ref name":0" />. He died in Raymond Terrace on the 3rd of July 1904.<ref name=":0" />
