TheLiberal.ie is an online news publication based in Ireland. Owned by the Locksher Group, it was launched in January 2014 and founded by Irish media entrepreneur Leo Sherlock.
Concept and content
TheLiberal.ie states that it covers the news from a right-of-centre/libertarian standpoint. The publication takes its name from the principles of classical liberalism, with an emphasis on personal autonomy and limiting the power of the State. The site features original news articles, political analysis and op-eds on national and international current events, as well as an interactive platform for reader discussions, often on contentious topics.
Controversies
The Liberal has been accused of plagiarism by a number of journalists and members of the public, with many examples of articles published on the site being copied and pasted from other news sources.
Awards and nominations
In March 2015, TheLiberal.ie was among 43 nominees in the Startup category at the Irish SME Awards.
