The Zero Option is a 2009 fiction novel by David Rollins about the fate of Korean Air Lines Flight 007. The novel is, according to Rollins, based partly on the research and views of the International Committee for the Rescue of KAL 007 Survivors. Whereas the Committee for the Rescue maintains that the Russian Federation supplied Soviet transcripts of the 1983 shootdown of Korean Air Lines Flight 007 indicate a successful water landing off Moneron Island, and passengers and crew then recovered and incarcerated, The Zero Option develops the scenario that KAL 007, though badly damaged, was able to make a successful landing on Sakhalin Island and from there its occupants dispersed to various locations of the Soviet Union. Based partly on published reports of the Committee for the Rescue concerning the subsequent itinerary and locations of detention of KAL 007 passenger U.S. Representative Larry McDonald (D-Ga.) , The Zero Option weaves a fictional scenario concerning his experiences and the experiences of others, both passengers and their family members, in an attempt to win back the freedom of the passengers. A few of the historical characters in the fictional plot of the novel did play a part in the aftermath of the shootdown. One of these was Ed Meese, advisor to President Ronald Reagan and member of the National Security Council.
