The Stockyards Shopping Centre
|
The Stockyards is an outdoor shopping centre being constructed and located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The Stockyards is located at the northwest corner of Weston Road & St. Clair Avenue W. The shopping centre will open in Fall 2013/Spring 2014. It will have Canada's first newly built Target store. The Stockyards Shopping Centre is owned and managed by Trinity Development Group. Trinity is largely known for its suburban power centres. Its nearest property is at Dufferin and Steeles, and it has several more in Aurora, Newmarket, Vaughan and Brampton. The development will have about 1,700 parking spaces. In comparison, the Toronto Eaton Centre has 1,300. The buildings on some of the major streets - particularly St. Clair Avenue West - will feature retail that fronts onto these streets in order to be more pedestrian-friendly design. The architect is Perkins Eastman. A Facebook page for the centre was added February 10, 2012. An opening date has not been announced. History After 1993, when the Ontario Stockyards moved to Cookstown, most of the meat-packing businesses in the area either went out of business or moved. Since then, some of the area has been converted into big box stores including the Home Depot on the south side of St Clair. There have also been some residential developments, particularly townhomes. The Stockyards Shopping Centre will convert one of the largest remaining parcels of land in the former Stockyards area to a new use.
