The Serra Project

The Serra Project, a California nonprofit organization, was founded in 1987 to provide residences for people living with HIV/AIDS, who would otherwise be homeless or living in unsafe unhealthy conditions.
Services
The Serra Project provides housing and supportive services to AIDS-impacted persons and their families living below the poverty line in Los Angeles County. Housing sites are located throughout Los Angeles County. Housing support programs include several group homes licensed as Residential Care Facilities for the Chronically Ill for clients needing a high level of 24-hour care, as well as more than 90 rental units for permanent supportive housing for those living with both HIV/AIDS and a secondary diagnosis, such as mental health or chemical dependency challenges, who are able to live on their own. The organization also provides housing case management.
Affiliation
In February 2009, The Serra Project merged with another non-profit organization, Aid For AIDS, and both operate as DBAs under the of Alliance for Housing and Healing (formerly Serra Ancillary Care Corporation).The merger, which expanded programs to include financial assistance to help independent clients stay in their existing homes with short-term support or a limited supplement, move-in assistance when relocation is necessary, and other supportive services such as the Aid For AIDS pharmacy assistance program, was featured on the NPR (National Public Radio) program, Marketplace, in December 2009.
Funding and celebrity supporters
Funding for The Serra Project is from individual donors, private and corporate foundations, public funds, and fundraising events. Notable fundraisers include annual A Faire of the Heart, which was redesigned in 2011 as a gala benefiting Aid For AIDS and The Serra Project (Alliance for Housing and Healing) to honor leaders in HIV/AIDS research and/or support, and leading philanthropists and leaders in the field of entertainment that are aligned with the organization's mission. The 2011 A Faire of the Heart honorees are Holland Taylor, Barbara Lazaroff, and Dr. W. David Hardy. and Sheryl Lee Ralph,<ref name="serraproject" /> who narrates and hosts a video about client services.
