The Renewable Energy Automobile

The Renewable Energy Automobile, or TREA is an engine that runs off of energies that can be renewed in the car, without any outside help. It is a hypothetical automobile currently being designed by high school students, in Sandown Bay Academy. It is part of a competition called The Great Adventure, run by the British Science Association. The aim of the competition is to design a multi-terrain, eco-friendly car that can race around the world. Of course, as this competition is for 5 - 14 year olds, it doesn't mean that the car actually has to be built, tested and driven. It just means that it has to be designed. The absolute deadline for postal entries is Monday 2nd April, 2012. The task can be carried out as either a class (or science club) project or homework. The finished designs must be presented in the form of a poster, with labels for materials. The runners up receive £25 worth of books and the winning designers get a Nintendo 3DS.
Smart colours
Smart colour materials are that which change with heat. In this case, smart colour materials could be used to regulate the temperature inside the car. As white colours reflect heat and black absorbs it, Smart colour materials will line the outside of the car, which means that in hot weather the material will turn white, stopping extra heat from entering the car, and in cold weather, the material will turn black, which means it will absorb as much heat as possible.
Dual battery system
The Dual Battery System (DBS) is a hypothetical device in the making, which should allow greater charging and discharging of each battey. Used in conjunction with the separate charging techniques, this will mean that there will be extra ways to charge the batteries. The design is supposed to work by discharging one by using the energy for the consumers (such as the engine, lights, dashboard, windscreen wipers .etc), while charging the other with the renewable energies.
