The Merfish

The Merfish is a mythological aquatic creature with the head of a fish and torso of a human female. Also commonly referred to as the Backwards or Inverse Mermaid, references to the creature with the head of a large fish and legs of a young maiden can be found in the stories and artwork of various cultures worldwide. Notable images of "The Merfish" can be found in the cave-paintings of the Indigenous peoples of Australia . Much like the Mermaid, the mysterious nature of the creature has made it into a pop culture icon. The Surrealist Belgian artist Rene Magritte painted an image of a Merfish in his 1934 work "Collective Invention",. The 2005 Great Big Sea album The Hard and the Easy features the well-known image of a Merfish on its cover .
