The Magic Sapphire is a 2011 fantasy children's novel by Priya Hunt.
Plot
Abirami Forbes is not an ordinary mother's girl. She thinks that she is a girl like everybody else. She lives with her twin sister Vydehi and her father Hugh Forbes in UK and wants to find about her mother who died after hardly a year giving birth to them. One day in an accident his father and twin sister die, leaving her behind. Even a single memory has not stopped Abi from crying for her this much bad luck.
But there is more, she is sent to a school in a remote village of the Himalayas in India and has to join a dance school where she would be taught mythology, languages and the hardest for her - dance. And it is not a simple one. But a difficult Bharatnatyam. In UK she has never learned this dance. The school is not like her former school.

Here she finds about a mysterious suspense and something shocking about her mother. This would be the start of Abi's new search. Abi has to find out about her mother. She has to find out The Magic Sapphire. She has to compete with Pooja and win the Konark Festival to know the hidden secrets of her mother from the Sun God within the myths and the mythology. But she has to stay aware that someone is following her. She likes him but he is not who she thinks. He is dangerous and dangerous but Abi cannot believe that he is bad for her.
Main Characters
Abirami Forbes - Abirami(shortened as Abi) is the lead character of the story. She has a olive complexion with dark long hair and the black eyes gifted from her mother.She also had a twin sister named Vydehi(shortened as Vy)who did not survived after accident which caused death of Vy and even their father Hugh Forbes.She is sporty and slightly tomboyish and doesn't have any delicate grace like her mother
Jo Forbes - Jo ( or Aunt Jo) was the Aunt of Abi and Vy. She is 20 and is not so responsible person.She love to live life freely and make people laugh.
Akash Sharma - A friend of Abi's father
Shakuntala Devi or Guruma - The principle of the Gurukul which is located in a remote village of the Himalayas.
Varun - Stranger.

Sumathy - Best friend and roommate of Abi who is a orphan just like her. She was roughly 13 and had waist length hair and rabbit-like two front teeth.
Pooja - Rival of Abi who wants to get Abi out of Gurukul and tries to make Abi look shameless in Gurukul.
Krish - His actual name is Krishna though he is addressed as Krish due to the craze od Bollywood films by villagers. He has a nut - brown complexion and shoulder - length hair and he always carried a wooden flute. He is a guide and friend of Abi who helps Abi when she does not know what to do and how to face the situation.
Guru Usha - Teacher in school for the subject - natural science. She introduces Abi to the chores that one has to do in the school.
Guru Mahesh - Teacher in school for the subject - mythology. In his class, Abi gets totally bored because of the subject he teaches.
Other Characters
Raju - A beggar on railway station.
Bal - Krish's brother. Actual Name is Balram but is addressed with the name 'Bal'. He is stronger than Krish but he is not that smart and attractive like him.
Dhanya - A plump girl who's good at cooking and who defeats Abi in the cooking.
Sita - Friend of Abi and Sumathy
Kala - Friend of Abi and Sumathy.
Arundhati - A good student and dancer in school who is selected by Pooja for the competition.
Mr. Basu - A principle of a school in the city who will teach the beggars like Raju on weekends who really want to learn.
Dr. Jones - He is the doctor who treats Abi in the hospital after the accident.
Inspector Thomson - He is the Inspector who tries to find out clues about Abi's father and twin sister but is helpless.
Mrs Perkins - An Old lady with grey hair. She makes some breakfast of cake and sandwich with a cup of tea for Abi, Jo and Akash and helps to pack out the essential things before she goes to the airport to go to the Gurukul. She promises Abi that she will take care of her house.

Sequel
The book is followed by the sequel - seven steps to heaven. It will released soon. In the book Abi has to win in the Konark Festival and meet the Surya, Sun God to know the truth about her mother. She has to reach the seven steps to accomplish her task in the search of her mother.
