The EVVY Awards

The EVVY Awards are country, modeled after the Oscars and the Emmys. They take the Cutler Majestic Theater at Emerson College in Boston, MA. They live on the Emerson Channel as well as the Boston Neighborhood Network and the Internet via webstream.
The EVVYs are currently split to accommodate the finish of every school year, and are professional-quality broadcasts into which tens of students put hours' worth of effort. The EVVYs also are known for taking themselves very seriously. The EVVYs experience allows students to utilize equipment and resources standard in the entertainment industry. The show has evolved from humble origins into an elaborate student.
The show has gained national recognition and has received numerous awards, including 1st Place at the National Association of College Boardcasters Award (1993) and two National Telly Awards (1992,1993).
Previous awards of distinction have been made by Joseph Barbera, John Cusack, Gregory Hines, Matt Lauer, Denis Leary, Jay Leno, Frank Oz, Kevin S. Bright, Anthony Quinn, R. Brian DiPirro, Max Mutchnick, Sean Hayes, and Eddie Brill.
History
The EVVY Awards (also called the EVVYs) were founded in 1981 by then-students Martie Cook and Glen Meehan. The EVVYs were partnered with Emerson Independent Video (EIV), and, as Martie Cook revealed, could not be called the "Emmys" (her original choice of name, after Emerson) since there would be some legal rights issues involved. Instead she took the V from EIV and made the EVVYs.
The First Annual EVVY Awards took place in May of 1982 at the First and Second Church in Boston, and was dinner-banquet format as opposed to a theatrical show.
The EVVYs Today
The EVVYs were originally created to recognize achievement in television and video, but have now expanded to give awards to nearly every area of study at Emerson, with categories including Photography, Marketing, Theater, Journalism, and Writing. This year's show, taking place on May 16th, 2009, will be the 28th annual show, and will have over 50 categories of awards. Each year generates hundreds of submissions, with last year's garnering over 900.
As well as awards for individual student works, the EVVYs also presents Awards of Distinction to a prominent figure in one of the honored categories every year.
