The Biting Pear of Salamanca is a pop surrealist art piece by Ursula Vernon. It was uploaded to art-sharing site deviantART on February 27, 2006. Since then, it has been made into a meme by sites such as 4chan, as the "LOL WUT pear". The painting The actual painting, or image itself, is a 563 by 750 pixel digital image. The oil effect was created by using digital airbrushing. Conception Ursula Vernon says that "I was reading up on pop surrealism before bed, and this is the sort of thing that happens. Even for me, that's a little disturbing." Vernon is a children's book illustrator, and is also known for her web-comic Digger. Salamanca The background in The Biting Pear alludes to the fact that Salamanca is an imagined land, with giraffes and a small, touristy looking chipmunk. According to the description, the Pear "lives off low-flying birds, hand-outs, and the occasional unwary sightseer." A city called Salamanca also exists in Spain. |
