The Beijing Axis

The Beijing Axis (TBA) is an international advisory and procurement firm operating in four principal areas: Strategy, Procurement, Commodities and Capital. The company is known primarily as a cross-border solutions provider for the mining, oil & gas, engineering, procurement and construction, and manufacturing sectors in China/Asia Pacific, South Africa/Africa, Australia and Latin America.
It has offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, Perth, Mumbai and Johannesburg.
History
The idea for The Beijing Axis was conceived on the steps of the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China, in 2002 by Kobus van der Wath, who was a banker and consultant by profession. Mr. van der Wath saw an enormous opportunity in facilitating trade between Africa and China, while he was studying Chinese language and culture in Beijing. His partner in this venture is Cheryl Tang, a Shanghai native who had just recently returned to China after completing her Master's degree from Birmingham. The company's first transaction was to source bicycles from China for a client in Zimbabwe.
The first few years saw the company expand its sourcing business to include consulting work that involved market entry and partner engagement strategies for South African companies eager to penetrate the China market.
In 2010, a commodities division was established to help facilitate commodity trade between China and other markets.
In 2013, The Beijing Axis entered into a joint venture with Imperial Logistics, a global logistics and supply chain leader. The partnership aims to ensure that both companies and their clients are well-placed to reap the benefits of the thriving trade and development between the two fastest growing continents in the world - Asia and Africa.
Business model
TBA has worked with many international and Chinese multinational corporations, focusing on the Chinese mining and natural resources sector and on China's industrial and engineering sector. The company calls itself "a China-focused international advisory firm"; it supports international firms doing business in China and Chinese firms investing abroad.
The company publishes a quarterly review of Chinese economic and political issues called The China Analyst.
