The Base is a social networking platform discovered in November 2018 that has reportedly spread "neo-nazi" views. On 19 August 2019 the Winnipeg Free Press released a report claiming to have infiltrated the group, accusing Patrik Mathews, a member of the Canadian Primary Reserve, as being a member. This led to an RCMP raid on his home on August 20, and the Canadian Forces firing him on August 27. Mathews went missing on August 28.
In September, police in Winnipeg warned Mathews may have fled to the United States, and Vice described "The Base" as a "terror group" in addition to being a platform.
