Initially a solo artist, Paul “ThaiMex” Phruksukarn started performing the way most hip-hop acts in San Diego did; by grabbing the microphone and reciting verses or freestyles for free at random hip hop venues such as the Underground Improv in San Diego, California. Initially a producer, ThaiMex became a performer and formed one of San Diego’s most interesting and diverse hip-hop groups and collectives. The name of his group was Hue of Intuition and it was part of a larger collective known as Infinite Shades of Gray. After about five years of releasing albums and doing shows with Infinite Shades of Gray, it was apparent ThaiMex was the creative force behind Infinite Shades of Gray. The collective soon disbanded around 2000-2001 and shortly after ThaiMex could be found collaborating with a new group of artists. These new artists founded and inhabited the non-profit workspace known as Voz Alta were non other than the internationally recognized spoken word collective Taco Shop Poets. Since the Taco Shop Poets had always been known as a group for pushing boundaries and limits, ThaiMex seemed to fit right in. Unfortunately, after 10 years, the Taco Shop Poets currently seem to be inactive as a collaborative. Since then, ThaiMex has been seen at open mics from time to time. Also, there have been occasional performances at coffee houses and smaller venues around San Diego from time to time. It is unclear if he is currently an active performer or not.
