Temporary Kitchens Temporary kitchens are used to continue foodservice provision when normal kitchen facilities have been closed for a defined period of time, due to an emergency situation, or where extra food preparation facilities are required either due to increased demand for a short time, or at an event. There are a number of companies throughout the world who specialise in the rental of temporary catering facilities which include mobile catering facilities such as food carts, facilities housed in trailers, portable kitchen buildings and larger scale temporary kitchens made up from buildings joined together to form modular facilities which are designed to last a number of years. Temporary catering facilities can also be housed inside structures such as marquees or existing buildings by using portable extraction canopies to site commercial catering equipment. During a kitchen refurbishment temporary kitchens and catering equipment are often hired so that foodservice provision can continue at a location. Temporary facilities are often hired by the manager in charge of the kitchen or the business proprietor and are specified to enable the catering output to resemble the existing menu as closely as possible. During emergencies, temporary kitchen facilities are often required as part of larger scale temporary camp facilities, which have to be set up at short notice, often in areas of natural disasters where much of the existing infrastructure has been destroyed or damaged. Many armies across the world also use camp kitchen facilities to support field operations. Temporary facilities are used as they can be redeployed once a campaign has finished Temporary kitchens used at events depend on the size and nature of the engagement and are used to feed both the public attending the event as well as staff, officials, acts or competitors taking part. Events that often require temporary kitchens include music festivals, outdoor shows and sporting events. Facilities for public catering can range from foodcarts and concession stands to full scale pop-up restaurants with seated dining areas. For staff and those taking part in the event such as artists or event participants, much larger centralised hub style facilities are often supplied, such as the Athletes Village kitchen and dining facilities found at sporting events including the Olympic Games , Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, which are used to feed the thousands of athletes, staff and officials taking part.
