Team Swansea are a Saturday league side affiliated with Swansea University Mens Football Club. Established in 2011 the team are attempting to work their way up through the Welsh Footballing pyramid. They began the 2011-12 season in Swansea Senior League Division 4; tier 8 of the Welsh football ladder.
It's founders and creators are current university students at the time of writing (April 2012) and it's roots are found on a bus journey from Spain to Wales. The university had been away on a sports tour to Salou, Spain in 2011 and as the bus journey became more and more unbearable a few students began chatting about why the university didn't have a Saturday team affiliated with it and so Team Swansea was born. It's existence today is quite far from what it's originators had planned. Ben Griffiths, Jack Owen, Matthew Collins, Joel Stevens-Leach and Zak Shayler had spoke of a pink kit with a certain bunny embossed all over it, but they soon came to realise that it would prove very unpopular in the local leagues and so amended their original plans. Serious work was put in to creating to the team in the summer of 2011 and after much scrutiny from the league's executives it was offical, Team Swansea was born.
The name is in no way a 'rip-off' of the once famous Team Bath, the team are attempting to create history themselves and have great aspirations. Made up of second and third year university students in it's first year proper they have faired very well and appear to be gaining promotion at their first attempt. The future is bright for such a young team and those at the helm so enthusiastic.
The creation of the team wouldn't have been possible without a certain few people outside of the university football club and a special mention must go to Bergoni for supplying the teams first ever strips and to all at the Swansea Senior League for allowing the team to participate in the league.
