The documentary focuses on the convention event TanaCon, which was organized by American Internet personality Tana Mongeau and hosted by company Good Times Entertainment. The film is told from the viewpoint of Weist, who at the time of the convention was the company's CEO and worked alongside Mongeau.
Production
Weist announced the documentary's existence on October 17, 2018 alongside a notification that Good Times Entertainment would be filing for bankruptcy. Mongeau mocked the announcement on social media. Weist utilized footage he shot during the planning stage, which he has stated was initially intended to be used to pitch a documentary series to Netflix.

TanaCon: What Really Happened was released to Amazon Prime Video on November 2, 2018.
Reception
The Verge stated that TanaCon was tedious and utilizing incorrect information, stating that "The video also repeatedly sticks to incorrect claims that 15,000 or even 20,000 people showed up to the event. According to Garden Grove Police after the event, officers estimated there were around 4,000 to 5,000 people."
Mongeau has criticized the film on several occasions, such as after Good Times Entertainment declared bankruptcy.
