Surveillance Camera Man (also known as Surveillant Camera Man or SCM) is an anonymous Youtube personality. His videos consist of several scenes of the unseen cameraman closely approaching and filming a subject in a public setting, such as an outdoor two-person café table where the subject had been sitting alone. Most of his subjects react negatively to being filmed; when they ask him why he is filming them, he usually replies “Just taking a video.”<ref name="Lake"/><ref name="Bishop"/> Legal issues Many subjects insist that Surveillance Camera Man has no right to film them without their permission. However, in Washington State, where most of the videos appear to be filmed, there is no legal requirement to get permission before photographing subjects in public places. Recording audio, on the other hand, may be illegal after the subject has indicated a desire not to participate.<ref name="Lake"/> Surveillance awareness The videos may be intended to be a commentary on pervasive surveillance and related privacy issues. In a couple of scenes, he points out to the distressed subjects that they are filmed quite regularly. For example, he explains to one, "Look at it this way. Do you ever go to the grocery store?
