Surjeet Kaur

Surjeet Kaur (1926-2011), better known as Maji or Maiji, was a significant Sikh woman remembered for her work towards humanity. She was born on 15 July 1929 in the Pakistani village of Bauwali, near Lahore. Her Parent's name is not clearly known though her mother is described as to be a short woman hailing from a zamindar (land-owner) family of Lahore. Maji's brother died during the Indo-Pak partitions leaving her totally sad.
Surjeet was married to Sardar Charan Singh of the Ahluwalia clan. The couple is said to have shifted to Kolkata in the year 1951. Maji's social commitment increased in this period and she emerged as a successful singer of Punjabi Folk songs. She became the messiah of the common man with all nice qualities in her. Her husband emerged as a very successful businessman and it came out that "Behind each successful man is a woman." She was a very religious lady with deep faith in God.
She died on 13 August 2011 which was a Raksha Bandhan day,leaving many people full of grief.
