Suicide by airplane (or any airfoil device) is defined as intentional flight into terrain or intentional over-stressing of the aircraft in order to cause its destruction and suicide of its pilot. Two to three deaths each year in the United States are attributed to suicide by general aviation. Motivations and associated behaviors range widely: some pilots leave notes behind; others communicate cryptically with air traffic controllers; while in other cases, the intention to commit suicide can only be inferred or deduced from the incident's context.
Suicide by airplane is a highly successful form of suicide, with death resulting from collision impact and subsequent injuries.
