The Suffolk Coastal Floaters Hang Gliding Club (SCFHGC) was formed in May 1979 with members flying the coastal cliffs and low hills of Norfolk and Suffolk.
Winching, previously solely a sailplane method, became established in hang gliding in the mid 1980s with the club acquiring its first winch in 1986. This enables launching from a flat field, important in East Anglia for any serious flying.
The club's focal point moved to its Mendlesham site in 1992 where it remains, co-located with the local Microlight club. Its members still fly the coast but hang glider performance is now too high to make flying the low hills practical.
