Suctum

Suctum
Suctum refers to an area of a machined component that has distorted due to a previous thermal process. On subsequent machining, the area of suctum appears on the part as non-clean up.
Etymology
This word was first used in a NE Ohio machining/forging company. A hub for a tractor was machined and then induction hardened. After the induction hardening thermal process, the hub was ground and an area of suctum was noticed after grinding.
Mark Holbrook is credited with the first utterance of the word and it is now in common usage in NE Ohio manufacturing environment.
