Stick Stickly

Stick Stickly was the stick puppet host of Nickelodeon's Nick in the Afternoon summer programming block, which aired weekdays from 3-5pm EST. This Nicktoons segment ran for three summers from 1996 to 1998. Stick Stickly also appeared on Nick's 1997 New Year's Eve Special. Other projects Stick Stickly was a part of included contest promotionals for Kraft Foods (1996) and Toys R Us and Microsoft's Nickelodeon 3D Movie Maker.
His jingle during the Nick in the Afternoon segment became quite well known:
* "Write to me, Stick Stickly, PO Box 963. New York City, New York state, 10108!"

Nick In The Afternoon characters

Other characters for Nick in the Afternoon were Woodknot Stickly (Stick's long-lost twin brother whom he found in the World Trade Center in NY during the summer of 1996 on Nick In The Afternoon), Holly B. Wood (Stick's love interest), SuperStick (Stick's superhero identity), and Evil Stick (An evil lookalike of Stick Stickly who tried to take over Nick In The Afternoon). This all takes place in Stickopolis, a mini city for popsicle sticks, which is located next to Nickelodeon Studios.

Nick In The Afternoon segments

In between the shows shown, Nick In The Afternoon had Stick Stickly and his friends doing all sorts of things. There was a segment called Stump Stick, in which Stick had to answer a riddle asked by a famous Nickelodeon celebrity correctly, or he'd have to wear a Dunce Cap. This usually resulted in Stick not knowing the answer, and not even getting the joke. Another segment was called Dip Stick, where Stick would be blindfolded and dipped into some kind of substance having to guess what he was being dipped into. Substances included Mayonnaise, Slime, Gak, Mashed Potatoes, Gravy, Toothpaste and others. Segments similar to Dip Stick were Flop Stick and Splatter Stick, where Stick was dipped into substances in alternative ways, using different devices.
Another segment was Holly's News, where Holly B. Wood reported the latest news about Nickelodeon, Nick In The Afternoon and Stickopolis. She sometimes even held interviews with Nickelodeon celebrities such as Rosie O' Donnell and Melissa Joan Hart. Yet another segment went just before each show, where Stick was tied to a wheel and acted as an arrow to point to which show was coming up next when the wheel was spun. Kids also sent letters to Stick's address (see above) to write which show they'd like to see on Nick in the Afternoon.

Agi Fodor created Stick Stickly for Nick in the Afternoon while working for Nickelodeon's promo department, called Acme On Air.

Stick was originally designed and built by "Wavy" Dave Jordan, who was his first Puppeteer.

Stick Stickly was voiced by Paul Christie.

Tim Lagasse and Jim Napolitano ( Between the Lions ) took over building and performing Stick for 2 1/2 years.

Rick Lyon, ( Sesame Street, Bear in the Big Blue House and Between the Lions ) was the third puppet artist to take on Stick.

Brad Pope and Rob Saunders were also puppeteers for Stick.

Stick also really liked rubberbands and asked viewers to send in rubberbands for his birthday. He then used these rubberbands to make a large rubberband ball.

Trivia

* Liz Fodor, Agi's sister, voiced the character of Twiggy during the last year of Nick in the Afternoon & for the short movie, Nose Day (She also scored & performed the music for Nose Day).
* The 8-foot Stickopolis created for the show included places like Fodor's Fashions (named after Agi Fodor, Stick's creator), Abby's Attic (named after Abby Miller, producer), Brad's Garage (named after Brad Pope, prop maker and puppeteer), Rick Rickly's Dance Studio (named after Rick Lyon, assisting puppeteer), Dave's Diner (named after Rick Lyon's friend David Regan), Stickbuck's Café, and Stickolini Brothers Pizza.
* Internet icon Lemon Demon has written a song dedicated to Stick Stickly.
* During one segment, Stick Stickly was searching for his twin brother, Woodknot, only to find him at the WTC Twin Tower buildings in New York City.
* Stick once called NBA basketball player Shaquille O'Neal "Shaq Shaquely."
* One year there were so many Sticks sent in by kids that Nickelodeon densely decorated two large Christmas trees in their front lobby, and were still left with boxes of spares.
