Steven Canepa

Steven L. Canepa is an American business executive. He is currently the Global Managing Director and General Manager of IBM Global Telecommunications, Media & Entertainment Industry. He previously held the positions of Global General Manager of Media & Entertainment Industry and director of IBM Consulting and Services in Los Angeles. He has received three Emmy Awards for innovation and is recognized for his insights in digital transformation. Frost and Sullivan recognized his team as the Digital Media Company of the year and he has been named a key industry influencer by AlwaysON and Digital Media.
Early life
Canepa earned two BA degrees from the University of California, Los Angeles, in economics and political science, and also an MBA in Corporate Finance from the Anderson School at UCLA. He has also completed studies in the financial management program of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and in Harvard University's executive curriculum on strategy formation.
Career
Canepa went to work with IBM in sales and was promoted to the finance sales territory manager in the western US. Next, he formed and led IBM's first Consulting and Services organization. Canepa was then named a founding member of the newly created Media & Entertainment Industry organization. In 1995, Canepa was asked to lead the marketing organization, after which he advanced to global general manager.<ref name="IBMbio" /> During this time, he was named to IBM's Industry Academy, a select group of professionals recognized for exceptional industry eminence. In 2015, he was asked to lead the combined Telecommunications and Media & Entertainment industry group on a global basis. In this role, he is responsible for the P&L this organization working with firms in the telecommunications, cable, entertainment, on-line, games, advertising, broadcast, publishing, satellite, sports, music, search, & social segments.
Board memberships and honors
Canepa has been an active member of many boards, including Digital Domain (culminating with the successful sale of the business). He is currently serving on the boards of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, the technology committee of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and . He has also served on the boards of MusiCares, Digital Hollywood, and a number of other boards. He has been a long serving member of the boards of the Bogart Pediatric Cancer Research Fund and Junior Achievement of So CA. He has received three Emmy Awards for innovation in the broadcasting area, including the application of leading technologies to improve local advertising insertion into national broadcast streams and the broadcast of high-definition television and sports content.
