Star Trauth is an American artist who was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and has lived and worked in Miami, Florida since 2013. She is best known for her unique installations called totems. Totems are fiber tapestries formed around a hard core.
Early life and education
Star Trauth was taught to embroider by her mother and to Macramé by her father. Further, her parents were influential in modeling the practice of reuse and creative use. She learned from her Grandmothers how to sew, knit, and crochet. Trauth taught herself to knit and is particularly interested in incorporating not only fiber into her works, but also metals and found objects she deems interesting. She attended The College of Mount Saint Joseph and Antonelli College to earn her BA in Fine Art. Her focus was in Interior Design and Textiles.
Career
Trauth began to focus almost exclusively on her Totem installations four years ago. A new home brought new inspiration. As the medium uses traditional fiber techniques in a nontraditional way, its a journey of trial, error, and experience. The process and resulting installations have brought recognition from art lovers in Europe, Asia, and The Americas. In 2016, Star Trauth was recognized for her outstanding originality and quality of her art by Julika Goette, Curator, Palm Art, Award of Excellence. and by The International Cultural Arts Federation of South Korea for her mastery of fiber art installation.
