Overview
Square Enix Music Online (SEMO) is a large community website dedicated to promoting the awareness and appreciation of video game music from Square Enix, Nintendo and other Japanese-based game companies that produce popular video game music. A prominent characteristic is their music coverage of the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest series, as well as other smaller games such as Kingdom Hearts, amongst several other game titles along with their related musicians and composers. The website also features many fan-made reviews of Official Sound Tracks, video game news, forum discussions, sheet music arrangements, interviews with composers and an assortment of other various activities designed to meet the needs of every type of fan and visitor.
The website considers itself to be the leading resource for video game music, and is updated on a daily basis. Forum members and guests are encouraged to interact with one another by joining in forum discussions. As of June, 2008 the site attracts 2000 visitors per day.
It is important to note that the site is in no way corporately linked or supported by Square Enix; rather it is an independent self-established resource, created by fans for the fans. However it has received high praise from various music composers for its achievements.
The webmaster is Chris Greening, who runs the site alongside experienced staff.

While a fair proportion of the site’s population are fans, there is also information that caters for visitors interested in the details of soundtracks. Catalogue numbers of official releases and the release dates of reprints, coupled with a link to a reliable website for online shopping, where possible, ensures that buyers are not subject to illegal bootlegs. The policy of Square Enix Music Online has always been to support video game artists, rather than purchasing the many illegal copies that exist in the market that do not help the artists in any way.
These links to websites that sell official Square Enix Music Merchandise are invaluable as the official company Square Enix itself only offers iTune downloads, which does not cater for consumers who wish to buy actual CDs or DVDs. This justifies the existence of 900+ album information entries and reviews, vital for consumers that need to know the exact detail of their products before proceeding to buy them. Also, it is often the case that many of the soundtracks are no longer in print by Square Enix, which makes this database even more valuable to consumers.
It is notable that in its strong stance to counterattack bootlegs, Square Enix Music Online has affiliated itself with Chuddah’s Corner, a similar website that also has much information on the various companies that sell bootlegs. This gives more insight into the consumer’s online purchasing awareness, since many online stores, such as eBay have several illegal sellers.
