Spacetrace

SpaceTrace is one of the longest running browser based massively multiplayer online strategy game with a sci-fi setting. The game launched in 2001 and was very popular until 2007. Currently the game has a small, but loyal user base that praises the game for its original and balanced design.
Gameplay
SpaceTrace is a space warfare game that involves researching technologies, exploring the space and of course space battles. Players form alliances that fight for points and control of score planets. CTF (capture the flag) is also a big part of alliance warfare.
The game features 5 races.
*Humans - Low lifeform that uses dirty tactics like piracy, bounty hunting and kamikaze technology.
*Kazuula - An insectoid race that specializes in defensive EMP-technology.
*Mycilloid - A fungus lifeform that holds the technology of reconstructing destroyed ships.
*Nanites - A collective "hive" of nanorobots. They specialise in cluster ships.
Mechanics
Space travel happens in real time. The travel distances between planets range from a few hours to a few days allowing for a "relaxed" gameplay that doesn't require logging in at frequent intervals.
Every player account has a lifespan of 3 months. When that time is over a player's score is saved in the high score table and all his fleets are destroyed. Then that player can restart and choose a new race and name. The game is played in eras that also last for about 3 months. When an era ends all alliance scores are reset and winners declared. Then after a few days of pause another era starts.
This lifespan system creates balance in the game keeping all players at relatively equal levels concerning researched technology.
