Space bat

Space bat, or Spacebat, refers to the sighting of a solitary free-tailed bat clinging to the outer foam layer of an external fuel tank of the NASA Space Shuttle Discovery during its March 16, 2009 launch, STS-119. The bat became the topic of several news stories and knowledge of its story went viral via the Internet. NASA scientists concluded the bat likely died during the launch. It was reported that spacebat was injured and thus unable to extricate itself. the bat was given the name Brian by Internet users following his plight. Reactions to Spacebat ranged from sympathy for his misguided attempt to shelter, to envy for its apparent desire to reach beyond its natural flying abilities and for its adventurous spirit.
