Southern Fires Restaurant, is a soul food dine-in restaurant. It is located in the downtown area of Detroit, Michigan.
History
John Thompson started the southern-style restaurant in 1994 under the name "Franklin East" in a section of Detroit then known as the "Warehouse District." However, Thompson decided to move the restaurant to the downtown area. The new location, at the time, was a five-story manufacturing plant in poor structural condition located in the downtown area of Detroit on Bellevue Avenue . Thompson and his family repaired and transformed the building into the current restaurant in 2001. In November 2001, the restaurant was opened for business was renamed Southern Fires Restaurant.
Food and Reception
Southern Fires is a soul food restaurant, and many of it dishes are inspired from various traditional southern recipes. The restaurant's menu is limited to 15 items, including cornmeal-fried catfish, T-bone steak, and rib tips. Popular side dishes include the restaurant's collard greens and its macaroni and cheese, which is served more dry than usual.
Southern Fires' dishes have been described as "simple, satisfying fare" and "pure comfort food." Singer-songwriter and Detroit native Teairra Marí has also said that " makes the best soul food around."
