The South Dakota Panhandle is a southeastern part of South Dakota. It marks the southernmost point in South Dakota. Located at , 8,948 people live in the area as of 2022 despite it only being 964 km² (372 sq mi) and having a population density of 9 people per km² (24 people per sq mi.) Its largest city, Dakota Dunes, is an unincorporated community of 3,156 as of 2022. Following in second, North Sioux City, is a city of 3,015 as of 2022. In Third, Elk Point, is a city of 2,124 as of 2022. Vermillion, South Dakota's 12th largest city almost would've become the panhandle's most populous city if it was in the panhandle. Vermillion is almost is in the panhandle but barely right next to it.
