Smuglets is an obscure outdoor sport played by the modern day inhabitants of the Finger Lakes region of New York. It has existed approximately 5 years and is played with a hooked stick (known as a smuglet) no more than 4 feet long, with which a player catches, throws, picks up and carries the ball, which is two wooden balls connected by a rope. The goal consists of two posts three feet high supporting at each end a 5 foot stick which is to be knocked off with a throw of the balls to score a point.
The game is played 6 players to a team, with no fixed positions except an optional goalie, who, because they are allowed a smuglet that may be longer than 4 feet or may be forked, is limited to their own half of the field. A round starts with 5 of the 6 players of each team within a sticks reach of their own goal and the remaining 1 player from each team starting at the center of the field with the balls on the ground, with one hand on their smuglets, the end of which is on the ground under the rope of the balls. At the blow of the whistle or the count of three the two players in the center may attempt to gain possession of the balls and the players waiting at their goals may enter play. This restarts at each point scored.
