Slovenian Exclusive Economic Zone

The Slovenian Exclusive Economic Zone is that part of the Adriatic Sea claimed as an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) by Slovenia. It is disputed with Croatia as part of a wider border dispute in the gulf of Piran.

Geography of the region and UN Convention on the Law of the Sea
The northern point of open sea in northern adriatic is 12 miles away from both Croatia and Italy and a few miles further from Slovenia.

According to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, an EEZ should be connected with territorial waters which cannot extend more than 12 miles from the coastline.

In 1998., Slovenia explicitly confirmed that its territorial waters extend to this distance, which is unsufficient to maintain contact to the open sea.

When Croatia proclaimed its own EEZ in 2006, Slovenia emphasised its own continued maintenance of territorial rights to access the open sea.
