In both domestic, industrial, and other forms of catering, the phrase sink salad refers to an often colourful collection of waste which forms over time through the accumulation of food and non-food particles which may have either suddenly or gradually accumulated in a sink strainer or plughole. Over time, these particles may lead to a blockage which requires salad tossing in order to clear. This in turn refers to the process of removing the sink strainer and discarding its contents in a bin or waste basket. Sink salad is not a formal term and references to the phenomenon are typically only made in the vernacular. Online dictionaries of colloquial phrases and idiom such as Urban Dictionary have catalogued the concept since at least 2008. The phrase has yet to appear in the Oxford English Dictionary.
